First-Time Landlord

Before the first tenant, decide who handles what.

Turning a home into a rental brings decisions about the property, tenant selection, paperwork and the work that continues after move-in.

Begin with the decisions you need to make before move-in. Then separate the work you’ll handle from the work you want help with.

No. 01First-Time Landlord

Start with four decisions.

  • The property. What needs checking or preparing before it is offered for rent?

  • The tenancy. Who will handle enquiries, screening, documentation and move-in coordination?

  • The ongoing work. Who will respond to tenant questions, collect rent and coordinate repairs?

  • Your role. Which decisions do you want to make, and what information will you need?

For requirements that apply to your property or tenancy, use current official information and qualified advice where needed.

Bring the questions you already have.

Tell Chris Clarke about the home, its location and when you’re considering renting it out. He can discuss whether the service fits.
